THE DATA: Gil Keenan (“Monster House”) brings us the big-screen adaptation of Jeanne DuPrau’s post-apocalyptic young adult novel that bears resemblance to “Journey to the Center of the Earth” ($21 million).

OUR TAKE: Another family friendly offering, “The Express,” opens opposite “City of Ember.” That could cut into what doesn’t figure to be a gigantic audience anyway for what the LA Times calls a “dystopian ‘Great Escape.’”
