Super Market: "Star Trek" Opening Weekend

NOTE: Double your winnings with Super Markets. If you win, we’ll multiply your winnings times two. If you lose, you only lose at a 1:1 ratio. Super Markets for 2009 movies will close approximately three months before the currently scheduled opening weekend. All participants still in the market at the close of trading will immediately receive $500.
THE MARKET:“Star Trek” goes into wide release on May 8, 2009. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million. Trading closes February 1 at midnight PT.

THE DATA: JJ Abrams’s “Star Trek” opus stars Simon Pegg as “Scotty.” Not so conspicuously absent: William Shatner himself. 2002’s “Star Trek: Nemesis” grossed $18.5 million its first weekend out.

OUR TAKE: The eleventh “Star Trek” installment is certain to be the most hyped in recent memory, if only for Abrams’s involvement. Something tells us we won’t get through this all without a fair amount of wailing and teeth gnashing from die-hard fans. Something also tells us this prequel will have a better box office journey than recent voyages of the Enterprise have.
