"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" DVD Sales

THE MARKET: “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs will be released on Tuesday, October 14, 2008. How much will the film gross in total first-week sales as reported by The Numbers? The sales period will run from Tuesday to Sunday, Oct. 19. Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $85, for example, would be worth $137 if the DVD grosses $137 million in its first week. Trading closes on October 14 at 9 a.m. ET.

THE DATA: Summer blockbusters of years past have proven to be a decidedly mixed bag when it comes to DVD sales. “Pirates of the Caribbean 3” ($167.4 million) and “Transformers” ($147.9 million) increased their overall hauls substantially. On the lower end of the spectrum, “Spider-Man 3” and “X-Men 3” bankrolled first week sales in the low $50 million range.

OUR TAKE: There was little surprise when “Skull” took in $100 million over its Memorial Day weekend debut. But its afterlife remains to be determined. Surely there are a lot of DVD buyers out there who want to complete their “Indy” collections, no less viewers who failed to catch the flick in a crowded summer season. If you threaten us with a whip, we’d say a little north of $100 million for the first week of sales.
