THE MARKET: “The Haunting of Molly Hartley” goes into wide release on Friday, October 31, 2008. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety on November 3? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million. Trading closes on October 31 at 9 a.m. ET.
THE DATA: This kinder, gentler horror flick is brought to you by first-time director Mickey Liddell and two newblood writers, John Travis and Rebecca Sonnenshine. Recent exemplar “Mirrors” opened to $11.1 million.
OUR TAKE: “The Haunting of Molly Hartley” has raided The CW for teen stars
AnnaLynne McCord (“90210”) and Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”). Clearly the PG-13 flick is making a play for the ‘tween audience that has aged out of trick-or-treating – but isn’t old enough to get into “Saw V.” That seems like a small slice of the pie, but Halloween is all about specialized demographics (kids, cross-dressers, nuts in the East Village) coming out in force.
